‘Absolute disregard': Alki Beach left littered over warm weekend

A Seattle Parks Department official says people need to have more respect when visiting city beaches.

People left a mess at one of Seattle’s most popular sandy spots, Alki Beach, this weekend, when temperatures in the city reached record highs.

A Facebook user shared photos to the KIRO 7 News page showing litter strewn throughout the picnic area.

The resident who posted it calls it a disturbing trend at Alki Beach.

“I manage one of the store fronts along Alki. It's a beautiful location. A sprawling view of The Sound, Mount Baker, Queen Anne and The Space Needle. It's one of the few sandy beaches in the city, so I absolutely understand the draw of thousands of Seattleites migrating over to enjoy sun, sand and a good BBQ,” Facebook user wrote Aaron Scofield.

“What I DON'T understand is the absolute disregard for this beautiful place. People are coming to take in the natural beauty of this beach, and their reaction is to literally dump garbage on it.”

The Parks Department says part of the problem is a lack of staff.

Since it's only the first week of June, DeMeritt doesn't have additional seasonal workers on the job yet.

She's says adding more trash cans for people won't help because it would attract more rats to the area.

That's why she's calling on people to be more respectful of public places.

The Parks Department hopes to have seasonal workers to help out in the next few weeks.
