Humpback whale found on beach near Vancouver, B.C.

WHITE ROCK, British Columbia, Canada — Good Samaritans and scientists were unable to save a humpback whale that washed up on a beach south of Vancouver, B.C., on Tuesday morning.

Onlookers found the whale tangled in fishing line at about 5 a.m. and tried to help it by dumping buckets of water on it, CTV reported. Vancouver Aquarium staffers showed up at around 8 a.m. and said the whale had been dead for some time.

"The beached whale had lacerations on its body that are indicative of rope entanglement," Vancouver Aquarium veterinarian Martin Haulena told CBC News. "It was severely emaciated and had probably not eaten properly in a long time."

The whale was estimated to be about 33 feet long and between 1 and 2 years old.
