MERCER ISLAND, Wash. — Firefighters had to deal with exploding ammunition while fighting a fire at a Mercer Island home Tuesday morning.
The fire started shortly before 5:30 a.m. at the home on southeast 59th Street and Island Crest Way.
Fire officials said the homeowner heard a noise and thought someone was in his garage. When he opened the door to investigate, he saw small amount of fire and smoke, went back into the house to get his wife out and called 911.
Ammunition in the garage began exploding and leaking gas from a vehicle in the garage ignited. The fire extended from the garage up into the attic and down the west side of the home.
Crews pulled down ceilings to ensure the fire was contained. About a dozen fire trucks responded.
The garage was fully involved in flames and the car inside was a total loss. The home has substantial damage.
The homeowner and his wife got out safely and no one was hurt.
