TACOMA, Wash. — Former University of Washington and current Sacramento Kings basketball player Isaiah Thomas spent Friday encouraging kids to read during summer break.
Thomas partnered up with World Vision and Metro Parks at Roosevelt Elementary to teach Tacoma schoolchildren the importance of reading over the summer months.
The NBA point guard told the children the importance of continuing to read during their summer break, and that picking up a book can open them up to worlds and experiences they’ll never forget.
“Growing up here, I know we didn’t have everything,” Thomas said. “And (it's) what I got in my heart that I want to give back.”
Thomas helped World Vision distribute 500 new books to the children.
According to a World Vision representative, the books are among 100,000 that were donated this year through World Vision’s partner First Book for children in local schools and programs in Seattle.
