Edmonds students get active during National Bike to School Day

EDMONDS, Wash. — In honor of National Bike to School Day, students at Sherwood Elementary got active and cycled all the way to campus Wednesday morning.

“I’m totally excited, I’m nervous and excited at the same time,” said Sherwood sixth-grader Leinani Ledua.

“I’ve never seen this many people on their bikes or scooters,” said student Gavin Wohlhart.

Gavin is a third-grader at Sherwood and one of many students who showed up at Hickman Park to bike to school with friends.

“You have to ride something that is not energy powered. You have to do it yourself,” said Wohlhart.

Students say the best part of biking to school is being eco-friendly.

“It’s nice, because we’re not polluting it with the cars, and we’re getting to use something that is also fun,” said Sherwood student Samantha Stritzke.

“Yeah, and also you get fresh air because you’re out here and not bundled in a car,” said Wohlhart.

Teachers, parents, and even Edmonds Mayor Mike Nelson hopped on bikes and led students to school.

“Whatever we can do for kids to be active, to bike to school, in a safe way,” said Nelson.
