MARYSVILLE, Wash. — Perhaps the intention was to make a splash. But the teen who tossed a water balloon randomly from an oncoming car caused a very different result.
The impact smashed a windshield and sent glass shards flying while Todd and Lisa Bond were trying to control their Jeep Liberty in traffic.
The Bonds were driving about 35 miles an hour down a two-lane Marysville road when the prank was suddenly pulled by four kids riding in an SUV.
"I just saw an object flying through the air and it came from the oncoming vehicle," Todd Bond said.
On impact, the water balloon blasted against the Bonds windshield with the kind of force you might expect from a thrown brick.
"It just exploded,” Bond said. “Glass actually came inside and ended up cutting my foot when I got out of the car."
The Bonds called 911 and tried to chase the SUV.
"I don't even know if they knew the windshield exploded,” said Bond. “But I'm sure they knew we were chasing them afterwards,"
The black SUV got away. Other drivers reported seeing the driver blowing stop signs, speeding, and even throwing eggs.
Bond says the prank could have killed someone.
"Somebody could have rear-ended me when I jammed on the brakes, trying to stop,” he said. " I could have swerved to try to miss him and went in the ditch because along there it's all ditch on both sides."
Another driver who took cell phone photos of the SUV gave the photos to police.
The Bonds replaced their windshield for more than $200 out of their pocket. They say this should be a teaching moment for teens getting out of school.
“Before you do stuff like that, think about your own family, think about what could happen if it was your parents or grandparents or something riding in the car."
