SHORELINE, Wash. — King County deputies are investigating an apparent murder-suicide in Shoreline that left a husband and wife dead on Saturday.
A family member confirmed with KIRO 7 that the husband and wife are Nicholas Herschberger and Laurel Hoffman.
On Friday, the King County Sheriff's Office told KIRO 7 that it appears as though, Herschberger, shot Hoffman multiple times before shooting himself.
Larson of the King County Sheriff’s Office said she could not identify the couple, but that the two were in their 30s.
Larson said just before 9 a.m. a woman called 911 to report hearing two shots fired in her home in the 500 block of 175th Street.
According to deputies, the woman went downstairs to find her daughter-in-law on the floor and that she appeared to be shot.
Officers helped get the woman and her 2-year-old grandchild out of the house safely. But inside, they found both her son and daughter-in-law dead.
Authorities said the woman lived with her son, his wife and their child.
Larson said it was not clear whether the husband or wife was the shooter.
Several neighbors who talked to KIRO 7 do not recall hearing any gunshots Saturday morning, but they noticed something was wrong when first responders filled the street.
Diane McLemore, who lives across 175th Street from the Herschbergers, said she knows Nicholas Herschberger's mother and once visited the family in their home, tucked away from the busy street.
“They were very wonderful people. I know in the summertime, I would often hear bongo drums going and stuff. Kind of like stuff you would hear in the park somewhere, where people are just out having a great day,” McLemore said.
McLemore said the family generally kept to themselves.
“I’m so sad this happened here, or anywhere. But this is a great community here. You don’t expect it anywhere, but it’s so quiet over there,” she said.
