SEATTLE — Seattle City Light will push for approval on a new electrical substation to handle growth in one of Seattle's fastest growing neighborhoods – South Lake Union
The proposed Denny Way substation would occupy Pontius Avenue from the edge of John Street to Denny Way for the project that includes a 110,000 square foot building.
After the public weighed in, City Light changed the design and agreed to build a smaller, single-level sloping building with an open space area next to it, a community meeting space and other amenities.
However, the city's transportation committee will need to consider waiving some development standards like the façade height and setback.
A new underground transmission line would connect the new Denny Way Substation to the one in SODO.
The project costs $10.6 million and would happen in stages between late this year and 2020.
A joint town hall, committee meeting and public hearing will be held Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Belltown Community Center on Bell Street.
Hundreds of people have weighed in on the project over the years and have led to changes.
