Amazon: Stay tuned Seattle, Sunday package deliveries coming soon

SEATTLE, Wash. — Sundays and the U.S. Postal Service have been like oil and water. They just don’t go together.

But that’s changing thanks to a deal with Amazon.  Starting this week in Los Angeles  and New York, the USPS will start delivering Amazon packages on Sundays.

“We have been working on this for a long time,” said Amazon Spokesperson Kelly Cheeseman.  “We had to put infrastructure, some unique technology solutions into place.”

Amazon is headquartered in Seattle, so KIRO 7 asked when Sunday service will roll out here.

“Stay tuned, we do have Amazon Fresh in Seattle where Sunday delivery is a possibility,” said Cheeseman.

Did you catch that?  You may not have realized it, but you can get Amazon products on Sundays in Seattle.  You can already get an Amazon Fresh delivery of food on Sundays, and if a non-food item is in a local distribution center, you can add it to your Amazon Fresh order.

You can also get Amazon packages on Sundays via FedEx, UPS, and other carriers, but you would have to pay extra.  With USPS Sunday deliveries, standard shipping rates will apply.

So Amazon Prime members will be able to order something on Friday and get it Sunday for free.

Post offices will stay closed on Sundays and there’s still a push to end Saturday mail service.

“We think the future of the post service will be a seven-day package delivery world,” said USPS Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe.  “We've lost some volume in the mail world, and (are) shrinking it down to five days.”

Sunday delivery is welcome news to James Tennison, an Amazon Prime member.

“Especially because of work, I don't like a package being left on the doorstep,” said Tennison.  “I have a busy schedule and sometimes they don't leave it.  You have to pick it up at the Post Office, so I think Sunday delivery is a great idea.”

Cheeseman would only say that Sunday Amazon package delivery with USPS will roll out in other cities in the next year.
