SEATTLE — For the past 11 years, 90-year-old John Kenny has worked with Local VFW 2995 to send more than 16,000 care packages to Iraq and Afghanistan.
"It's unbelievable in this day and age that we have troops that need foot powder need a thing like nail clippers," said Kenny.
He says that it's his way of honoring veterans who died serving by helping troops still living.
"That's how i got involved because i know what we went through," said Kenny.
The care packages are filled with toiletries, snacks, candy and even Beanie Babies.
"They give it to the kids and in turns the kids tell them where the bombs are," said Kenny.
VFW 2995 collects supplies and monetary donations 3 times a month outside Fred Meyer grocery stores.
Kenny is now calling on volunteers and even veterans to do more.
"You get those letters back from the troops and they have nothing," said Kenny.
VFW 2995 ships out 100 of these care packages a month and Kenny is hoping more veterans groups will get involved and send many more of these packages overseas.
"If all the groups got together and did what they should be doing our front guys would not be in need of socks or need anything," said Kenny.
Volunteers will sort donations this week, and will ship out 150 care packages to Afghanistan next week.
