The Washington State Department of Transportation said Wednesday it plans to reopen the road to Artist Point, which has been closed intermittently since October 2010 due to heavy snow.

"We're going to go for it this year - we're planning to reopen the road to Artist Point, despite deep snow left behind from a second La Nina winter," the agency said on its Flickr page. "This should come as exciting news to many, considering we only cleared part of the road last year because of super deep snow and cold weather."

Artist Point is located at the end of State Route 542 and offers views of Mount Shuksan and Mount Baker.

Workers checked depths on the highway, and up to the parking lot, on Wednesday and found depths ranging anywhere from 20 to 50 feet.

WSDOT said it plans to start cutting drainage ditches next week.

“We expect to hit the snow clearing hard in early to mid June,” WSDOT said on Flickr. “That plan, of course, is weather dependent. But if the last five days of warm weather are any indication of what we can expect the rest of this spring and summer, then we should be good to go.”
