RENTON, Wash. — After Richard Sherman signed a three-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers, the Seahawks now have an opening at the left corner.

The Seahawks feel confident that Shaquill Griffin is the man for the job.

The sophomore is making the move from right cornerback to the left side this season.

"It's not an issue," Griffin, who played both sides at the University of Central Florida, said. "Just moving over, it's a little different step for me, but nothing that I can't focus on. But I'm loving the left side and I'm honored to be on that side now. I'm here to help my team anyway I can."

Griffin, who started 11 games at right cornerback last season, said Sherman taught him "how to be a professional" as a rookie.

"The main thing that I did learn from him was he would just continue to teach me to find myself and be myself," said Griffin. "I feel like the best part of last year was staying poised in different situations. Last year, my rookie year, everything was new for me. My whole thing was I wanted to stay poised in different situations and scenarios. That's something that I took with me and he'd continue to just teach me the ropes."

"[We] just want to do that because we think 'Maxie' [Byon Maxwell] has done a really nice job on the other side, and we thought if we're going to balance it out and open it up, let's open it up on the right side and see what happens," Pete Carroll, a Seahawks head coach, said.

As the Seahawks look ahead to minicamp at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center next week, Carroll said that he expects six-time Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas to be there with the team.

"Yeah, it's mandatory, so we expect everybody to show up," said Carroll.

Carroll is sending a strong message that he wants all of his players at minicamp.
