Marco Gonzales (2-0) gave up one run over five innings and Paul Sewald picked up his seventh save of the season as the Mariners beat the Philadelphia Phillies in the first game of their three-game series on Tuesday, 5-3.

Mariners outfielder Jarred Kelenic got the first of his three hits on the day with a solo home run off Phillies starter Bailey Falter (0-4) in the top of the fifth inning. Two batters later, shortstop J.P. Crawford reached on an infield single to score Jose Caballero, giving the Mariners a 2-0 lead.

Gonzales surrendered a home run to Phillies third baseman Edmundo Sosa in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Mariners’ lead to 2-1. That was answered with a two-run shot by Mariners outfielder Teoscar Hernandez to score Eugenio Suarez from second in the top of the sixth inning.

Phillie’s third baseman Alec Bohm grounded into a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the frame, scoring Kyle Schwarber from third base and cutting the Mariners’ lead to 4-2.

Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh hit his second career triple to lead off the seventh inning, followed by a sacrifice fly by Caballero to extend the lead to 5-2.

Bohm doubled off of Sewald to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning and made it to third base one batter later after Sosa grounded out to Raleigh. An RBI single from Phillies outfielder Jake Cave scored Bohm to make the score 5-3.

The Phillies’ final out was shortstop Bryson Stott, who struck out swinging to end the game.
