UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — Whole Foods will open its first store in Pierce County Thursday.

The new grocery store is on Bridgeport way in University Place.

The University Place Mayor will be there for an 8:30 a.m. “bread-breaking” ceremony.

The company has flown in a professional pizza dough tosser. Matt Driscoll, a Whole Foods employee and member of the U.S. pizza team, will show off his acrobatic dough skills at the store this week.

The doors open at 9 a.m.

Nationwide, the grocery chain is gearing up to open a lower-cost chain of stores to try and entice younger shoppers.

CNN reports the stores could open as early as next year.

The chain hasn't been identified by name, but the idea is to stock cheaper goods to attract cost conscious buyers who might not shop for the high end groceries typical of Whole Foods.

Whole Foods operates more than 400 stores nationwide.
