Water service cut to Spanaway residents while utility flushes out brown water

SPANAWAY, Wash. — A two-day process to clean up the water supply in the Spanaway will begin Wednesday.

In southeast Spanaway, neighbors in a gated community say it's about time their water utility did something to clean up the water after months of it looking brown and dirty.

"It makes me think I want to move. I've discussed it with my kids,” said resident Audra Sanders.

One family showed KIRO 7 their tubs and toilets with dark stains left behind from the water.

The utility, Rainier Water Company, said the water quality has been within accepted levels at all times.

It blames sediments from naturally occurring wells in this area for the residue and stains.

But even after installing a new filtration system, the problem continued for homeowners.

There are signs up throughout the neighborhood reminding people they won't have water service Wednesday.

When the water is cut off, the utility will attempt to flush out whatever sediment or residue is left behind and hopefully restore clear water.
