LUND, Utah — Three people were hurt late Thursday when a train carrying 95 cars derailed in a rural area of Utah, authorities said.
According to KUTV and KSL, the derailment occurred about 10:10 p.m. on a flooded track near Lund.
“Three occupants of the train had injuries, and they had been able to exit the train and get on the upper side of the locomotive,” the Iron County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement early Friday. “Due to the rising floodwaters, the occupants could not evacuate off the top of the derailed locomotive. One subject had a head injury, which was bleeding. Due to the remote location and lack of medical supplies, there was a concern for the well-being of those injured.”
Because of the hazardous weather, emergency crews weren’t able to reach the scene until about 12:50 a.m. Friday, deputies said.
“After some time, the subjects were transferred off the train,” the statement read. “They were then transported to the hospital for further treatment. Two occupants were in good condition, and one was in stable condition.”
The train had been carrying “unknown cargo/freight,” according to the statement.
Several other local and state agencies also responded to the scene, the news outlets reported. The National Transportation Safety Board and Union Pacific are leading the probe into the derailment, officials said.
