Utah Gov. Spencer Cox wants to block any porn from being seen on cellphones and tablets sold in his state.
Cox, on Tuesday, signed legislation that will require porn filters to be installed on any cellphone or tablet sold in Utah, but not everyone is agreeing with the move, The Associated Press reported.
He said the law sends an “important message” about preventing children from seeing explicit content online.
The American Civil Liberties Union said the bill’s constitutionality was not considered. Some are calling the measure a limit on free speech.
Rep. Susan Pulsipher, the lawmaker who sponsored the bill, said the bill is constitutional since adults can deactivate the filters, the AP reported.
The signing may only be symbolic, as it would take five other states to take similar measures, before Utah’s law is implemented.
Utah lawmakers have called print and online pornography a “public health crisis,” the AP reported.
