Before you head out holiday shopping, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has a warning: do not use Future Motion’s Onewheel self-balancing electric skateboards.
The CPSC said that the device can cause a rider to fall, resulting in serious injuries or even death.
There have been four deaths reported between 2019 and 2021, with several reports of serious injuries attributed to the device not balancing as intended or stopping suddenly.
The injuries include traumatic brain injury, concussions, fractures and ligament damage.
The skateboards have been sold under the Onewheel brand since 2014 online and by independent dealers, for between $1,050 and $2,200.
“Onewheel” and the model name are on the side of the skateboard and the company logo is on the wheel.
The serial number can be found on the bottom of the skateboard rail.
The boards have not been recalled by the company, so the CPSC is urging consumers to not sell or donate them, and to stop using them immediately.
If you were injured while riding the skateboard, you can report the incident on the CPSC safer product website.
