CLEVELAND, Texas — More than 200 roosters and hens were rescued from an alleged cockfighting ring in Cleveland, Texas.
San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office said their months-long investigation ended with seven people arrested, charged with engaging in organized criminal activity, KTRK reported.
The raid on Friday recovered more than 200 roosters, $20,000 in cash and several vehicles, The Houston Chronicle reported.
Some of the birds were valued at $10,000 each. They were all taken to the Houston Humane Society to be checked out by veterinarians, KTRK reported.
Cockfighting is illegal in every state. It is also illegal to make, sell or possess cockfighting material, KTRK reported.
In Texas, it is also illegal to attend cockfighting events.
