LOS ANGELES — A 29-year-old woman died early Saturday after falling from a moving party bus on a downtown Los Angeles freeway, multiple media outlets reported.
California Highway Patrol officers responded just before 3 a.m. local time to a crash on the northbound 101 Freeway, where a woman had been struck by another vehicle. She was pronounced dead on the scene, KTTV reported.
According to KABC-TV, Heather Garcia was celebrating her niece’s birthday. Family members told the TV station that she tripped while dancing and fell back on the party bus’s door, which opened and sent her tumbling onto the Hollywood freeway.
“It’s just something that is a nightmare ... that doesn’t happen. It should not happen,” Garcia’s husband, Rafael Corral, told KABC-TV.
According to KTTV, the driver of the vehicle that struck Garcia never left the crash scene and cooperated fully with authorities.
Corral also confirmed to KABC-TV that Garcia, the mother of their five young children, would have celebrated her 30th birthday on Monday.
“You expect when you pay for a service so that you don’t drink and drive or do anything illegal ... you get there. Somebody takes you there safe, and you’re going to get back home safe because that’s what you paid the service for,” Corral told the TV station.
The party bus company was not identified.
