Man charged in plot to kidnap boss’ son for $2 million ransom, police say

MESA, Ariz. — An Arizona man plotted to kidnap his boss’ 12-year-old son and then planned to ask a $2 million ransom for the boy, investigators said.

The Mesa Police Department was informed that Lance Rohrer, 59, was planning to kidnap the boy whose father owns a car dealership where Rohrer works, KPHO reported.

In numerous audio recordings, Rohrer planned the abduction with an undercover officer. Police said Rohrer planned to use a cheap motel and bought three “burner” phones to use during the kidnapping, KSAZ reported.

“Rohrer was heard multiple times talking about killing the kid and being OK with it if the abduction plans did not work,” police said.

Rohrer was arrested and charged with suspicion to commit murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping and conspiracy to commit theft by extortion, according to jail records.
