FRESNO, Texas — Authorities have arrested the owner of seven dogs who mauled an elderly man to death on Monday, according to the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office.
Samuel Cartwright, 47, faces a second-degree felony charge of attack by a dog resulting in death. If he is convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Deputies said Cartwright is the owner of seven pit bull mix dogs that attacked Freddy Garcia, 71, on Monday afternoon. Sheriff Eric Fagan said at a news conference Tuesday that Garcia “did nothing to provoke these animals.”
“It was uncalled for. It was senseless,” he said. “He was not in anyone’s yard. He was walking to the store. He had nothing in his hands. The dogs just attacked him for no reason, for no provocation whatsoever.”
The dogs have since been captured, officials said.
Records showed Cartwright remained jailed on Friday afternoon with bond set at $100,000.
