According to WGN-TV and WMAQ-TV, attorney Steve Greenberg, whose clients have included singer R. Kelly, said his law firm has been retained to represent the parents of suspected Highland Park gunman Robert “Bobby” Crimo III, 21. Greenberg added that the family has retained attorneys Tom Durkin and Josh Herman to represent Crimo III, WGN reported.

In a Tuesday evening tweet, Greenberg said the parents “wish that we share the following: ‘We are all mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, and this is a terrible tragedy for many families, the victims, the paradegoers, the community and our own. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to everybody.’”

Although Greenberg did not identify the parents by name, The New York Times reported that the suspect’s father is Robert Crimo Jr., who ran for office against Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering in 2019. He lost, receiving 28% of the vote, the Lake County Clerk’s Office said on its website.

The statement came the same day authorities charged Crimo III with seven counts of first-degree murder in connection with Monday’s shooting, which left seven people dead and dozens wounded. Authorities said they expect to file additional charges against him in the case, WGN reported.
