Monopoly players will no longer win second prize in a beauty contest.
The iconic board game is receiving a modern makeover, with an emphasis on more socially sensitive ideas, Hasbro announced Thursday in a news release.
Hasbro is changing all 16 of Monopoly’s “Community Chest” cards to remove references to beauty contests, stock sales, life insurance policies and holiday cash, noting in a news release that the game was “long overdue for a refresh.”
The new cards will be available in the fall, Hasbro said.
New Community Chest cards will focus on topics such as “Shop Local,” “Rescue A Puppy” or “Help Your Neighbors.” Hasbro said fans of the game will be able to vote on the potential replacements.
“The world has changed a lot since Monopoly became a household name more than 85 years ago, and clearly today community is more important than ever,” Eric Nyman, Hasbro’s chief consumer officer, said in a statement. “We felt like 2021 was the perfect time to give fans the opportunity to show the world what community means to them through voting on new Community Chest cards. We’re really excited to see what new cards get voted in.”
The change to Monopoly was announced weeks after Hasbro said it would change its “Mr. Potato Head” product of toys to “Potato Head.”
Monopoly was first marketed by Parker Brothers in 1935. The street names on the original game board were patterned after roads in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Hasbro bought Parker Brothers in 1991.
