According to KTLA and KABC, the incident occurred Monday afternoon on North Heliotrope Drive near Los Angeles City College. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said an altercation between two transient men led to a stabbing, the news outlets reported. The victim, who wasn’t a student, died from his injuries, deputies said.

The incident prompted officials to place the campus on lockdown shortly before 3:30 p.m. local time, according to the news outlets.

“SHELTER IN PLACE,” the college tweeted at the time, adding that investigators were searching for a 5-foot-7, 160-pound Black man clad in a black jacket, a black shirt, white shorts and blue shoes. The college canceled in-person classes Monday evening but continued to hold online classes, KTLA reported.

About two hours later, officials lifted the lockdown, according to KTLA.

No further details, such as the victim’s identity or whether investigators apprehended the suspect, were immediately available.
