‘Doorbell just kept ringing’: 6-year-old spends $1,000 on food delivery

CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A young boy in Michigan managed to place several delivery orders using his father’s phone, resulting in $1,000 in food deliveries.

Keith Stonehouse told MLive.com that his 6-year-old son, Mason, was home with him and playing on his phone before bedtime when he got into the phone’s Grubhub app.

After Mason was put to bed, delivery drivers began to show up at the house.

“This was like something out of a ‘Saturday Night Live’ skit,” Stonehouse told MLive.com. “I was putting Mason to bed and saw a car pull up and the doorbell rang with the driver dropping off a big bag of stuff. … The doorbell rang again, and it kept happening. Car after car. Cars were pulling into the driveway while others were pulling out. I finally asked one of them what they were delivering. He said we ordered chicken shawarmas. I took the food and then it hit me. I looked at my phone with repeated messages that my food was getting ready, my food was being delivered. I looked at my bank account and it was getting drained.”

The food orders totaled nearly $1,000, which was helped by a generous 25% tip that the child added to each order, WJBK reported.

Stonehouse said that once he figured out what happened, he asked Mason what had happened.

“I was trying to explain to him that this wasn’t good, and he puts up his hand and stops me and says, ‘Dad, did the pepperoni pizzas come yet?’” Stonehouse told MLive.com.

Stonehouse took $115 from Mason’s piggy bank to put towards the cost of the food, and hopefully learn a lesson not to place orders without permission again, WJBK reported.

At least one order was declined by the bank, which sent Stonehouse a fraud alert after an attempted purchase of $439 from Happy’s Pizza, according to MLive.com.

Grubhub offered the family a $1,000 gift card after hearing what happened, WJBK reported.
