Colorado girl, 11, killed after falling under moving school bus

PARACHUTE, Colo. — An 11-year-old Colorado girl running to catch her school bus died Thursday when she tripped in front of the vehicle and was run over, authorities said.

According to the Parachute Police Department, the accident happened at about 7:30 a.m. MST, KUSA-TV reported.

Police said the girl, whose name has not been released, fell under the wheels of the bus, the television station. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Parachute Police Department and the Grand Valley Fire Department were called to the scene, along with the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, KREX-TV reported.

A neighbor in the area said the vehicle had left the bus stop after picking up other children, and the young girl was running to catch it, according to the television station.

“We’re just all in disbelief,” Wendy Thibault said. “It’s a small community.”

“Today is a sad day for all, it’s a sad day for our schools,” Garfield County School District 16 Superintendent Brad Ray said at a news conference Thursday. “It’s a sad day for our community, and it’s a sad day tonight in households.”

Police said the case was an ongoing investigation and did not release any other information.
