HOUSTON — Two boys steered an SUV to safety after their father was fatally shot while driving on a Houston freeway, investigators said.
The father was driving in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 when there was a loud noise, likely a gunshot, and shortly after he slumped over, KTRK reported.
His sons, aged 7 and 10, grabbed the steering wheel of the SUV and maneuvered the vehicle for about a mile until they were off the main lanes and came to a stop. The boys then ran for help. Their father was pronounced dead at the scene, KTRK reported.
No description of the suspected shooter or their vehicle was released.

Police commended the boys’ actions, which likely prevented further incidents.
“We don’t know if it was road rage or if it was someone actually trying to get these individuals,” Lt. R. Willkens said. “So, prayers for their family. The kids are safe right now.”
