SAN ANTONIO — Animal rescue officials in San Antonio said that nearly 80 cats and dogs were rescued from a home on Wednesday morning.
Animal Care Services said 51 dogs and 28 cats were recovered after authorities executed a warrant, KSAT reported.
Sgt. Manuel Flores, an ACS field operations supervisor for the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, said his agency was alerted about the home from firefighters who responded to a blaze at the residence, the television station reported. Six cats suffered smoke inhalation.

“It’s deplorable. The floor is saturated with what appears to be urine and animal waste,” Flores told KABB-TV. “There’s a large amount of filth, roaches, a lot of roaches, just a lot of debris. It’s not habitable.”
Most of the animals were in cages, KSAT reported.
A custody hearing will be held within 10 days to determine the final custody of the animals, which will be evaluated, according to KABB.
