2 college students hospitalized after falling from rooftop while taking selfie

PHILADELPHIA — Two Temple University students were hospitalized early Saturday after falling from the rooftop of a row home in north Philadelphia while taking a selfie, according to multiple reports.

Around 2 a.m. Saturday, authorities were called to an off-campus apartment on North Bouvier Street, WPVI reported. Police told the news station that two 19-year-old young women fell from the four-story building and onto the sidewalk of an alley.

One of the women, who suffered multiple injuries, was in critical but stable condition after the fall, WTXF-TV reported. The second woman, who suffered injuries to her right leg and left ankle, was last listed in stable condition, according to the news station.

It was not immediately clear what caused the women to fall from the roof. Police told WPVI the incident happened during a party. The building’s management company told the news station that the rooftop has a deck with a parapet wall and railings, although some students said it wasn’t safe.

“There’s not enough room blocking you from falling off,” Arnav Johri told WPVI. “So, if you’re drinking and you run right into it, it’s really easy to slip right off because it only comes to, like, a little halfway between your knee and hip.”

Authorities continue to investigate.
