2 police officers shot, suspect dead in Boston

BOSTON — Two officers were shot and taken to the hospital after responding to a report of a person with a gun in the Orient Heights area of East Boston.

According to Boston Police Commissioner William Evans, both of the officers are in "extremely critical condition" and have undergone blood transfers in addition to visits to the operating room.

The incident began around 10:51 p.m. Wednesday at 136 Gladstone St. when officers responded to the home. Within 15 minutes there were reports of an officer shot. Residents were asked to shelter in place for more than an hour while police were in the area.

“Anytime you have somewhat of an active shooter incident, until you get there and until you get the incident under control, you never know what you have,” Evans said.

Just after midnight, Evans announced that the suspect was dead inside the home and the shelter in place order was lifted.

“We’re not proud when we have to use deadly force, but we had two officers gravely injured here, and we had no choice,” Evans said.

Evans said there are nine additional officers being treated for trauma and minor injuries at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.

“I’m proud of the officers here. They ran into a fire fight and were able to pull two officers out to safety; unfortunately, we had to take a life in doing that,” he said.

There are limited details about the suspect, but Evans said he lived in the home and had been involved in a domestic incident with another male.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the two officers shot, their friends, family, and all of the Boston Police Department.
