Collier County, Fla. — In just the last 90 days, biologists in South Florida have removed 2,000 pounds of Burmese pythons from the area, including one that weighed more than 140 pounds and stretched across more than 15 feet, according to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida.
Biologists are removing the invasive reptiles from Collier County.
Pythons are highly invasive and are in the midst of their breeding season, which researchers are studying in hopes of tackling the problem.
The Burmese python is of particular concern because it appears to be causing massive declines in a range of native mammal species and is spreading throughout the Everglades, according to Conservancy of Southwest Florida.
