KENT, Wash. — A 15-year-old boy is dead after he crashed his dirt bike at a Kent racetrack, then was run over by another biker.
The teen, identified as Chase Stancil, was practicing Wednesday night at Pacific Raceways.
Investigators said after the teenager crashed, another didn't have time to react and accidentally ran him over.
He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and died sometime overnight
Pacific Raceways managers said the rider who hit Stancil is 19 years old. They said there was nothing he could do to avoid the accident. "It's truly one of those accidents that was unavoidable as soon as he lost control of his bike," said Jason Fiorito, president of Pacific Raceways.
Friends told KIRO 7 they're planning to hold a candlelight vigil in Stancil's honor at 8 p.m. Friday at Kentridge High School. Pacific Raceways also plans a moment of silence before Friday evening's motocross competition.
"Racing is a sport filled with thrills, and unfortunately with thrills comes a certain amount of danger," said Fiorito. He said in his 11 years at Pacific Raceways, this is the second motocross fatality.
"We're a tight-knit community," said Pacific Raceways Motocross Manager Lance Smail. "He was doing something he loved and it's just really a shame."
