TACOMA, Wash. — A Tacoma cancer survivor is responding after his photo was used in a popular meme.
The image compared Leon Mitchell II to Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry but labeled Mitchell as “Meth Curry."
The photo in the meme was taken when Mitchell was doing rounds of chemotherapy.
Late Tuesday night, Mitchell weighed in about the meme on his Instagram account.
"The fact that the meme was posted was a reminder of how distasteful and cruel people can be without background knowledge of the person in the bullseye of the target," he wrote in part. "If we are going to allow something like this go viral, let's do it for the right reasons."
Mitchell’s friends have started a campaign to tell his real story on how he has overcame cancer.
Mitchell told KIRO 7 the person who created the meme posted an apology, with a photo showing who Mitchell really is.
