Space Needle to offer virtual reality, other tech experiences

Space Needle workers strapped on cameras and walked outside the safety rails to film footage for a virtual reality experience.

SEATTLE — The Space Needle is slated to get some futuristic upgrades to entertain visitors.

Quick Facts:

  • Three new tech experiences
  • Virtual reality, 50-year time lapse, selfie
  • New features to premier later this year

The woman who designed the Needle's app a few years ago, Karen Olson, says there are some new features coming.

According to the Puget Sound Business Journal, visitors will be able to enjoy a virtual reality experience.

To build the experience, Space Needle employees strapped on cameras and walked around the edge of the Needle outside the safety rails.

Visitors will wear a headset that plays that video, so they can feel like they're taking the daring walk themselves.

For another experience, cameras have been set up a mile away from the icon. Using a kiosk on the observation deck, visitors will be able to view the feed, zoom in to see themselves at the top of the Needle and take a selfie.

The PSBJ reported that the third feature will be a 50-year time lapse.  A camera will take a 360-degree panorama of Seattle every 10 minutes for the next 50 years.  Visitors will use a kiosk to select a specific time period  and then watch a time-lapse video.

The new features are set to be up and running later this year.
