Sergeant shot in Spanaway shootout released from hospital

SPANAWAY, Wash. — Sergeant Rich Scaniffe, who suffered injuries in a shootout on Tuesday, was released from the hospital on Friday.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office noted Scaniffe was expected to be in the hospital for a week and credits the hospital staff in getting him home after just three days.

Scaniffe was shot in the leg as a member of a SWAT team serving a warrant at a mobile home park in Spanaway.

Deputy Dom Calata was killed in the shootout.

Scaniffe was escorted from the hospital by fellow SWAT team members and begins his long road to recovery.
