Soldiers home catches fire in Orting

ORTING, Wash. — Nearly a hundred disabled veterans were evacuated from the Washington Soldier’s Home Thursday when fire caused smoke to pour from a ventilation system.

Residents crowded under trees to get out of the afternoon sun as firefighters worked to find the cause of a fire.

Crews with Orting Valley Fire and Rescue, backed up by East Pierce and Graham fire departments swarmed the building to track down the source of the smoke while employees worked to get the people outside.

All the residents are disabled veterans, some confined to wheelchairs and even bed.

“Due to the fact that it was a skilled nursing facility with smoke visible we called for a second alarm and more ambulances,” said Orting Fire Chief Zane Gibson.

A small army of ambulances rolled out to transport residents if needed. The cause was finally determined to be a small motor that sent smoke into the ventilation system.

Officials at the home said getting the residents out quickly was a priority even though the fire turned out to be small and contained.

“All 93 residents are out of the facility and safe,” said Superintendent Willie Slusarski.

There were no injuries although one employee suffered minor smoke inhalation. That person was treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization.
