EVERETT, Wash. — Snohomish County detectives are asking for help to find a one-month-old girl after they found the infant’s previously missing 16-year-old mother Monday afternoon in South Everett.
Detectives believe 16-year-old Leah Marie Lund gave birth to the girl without medical care sometime in early September. Shari Ireton with the Snohomish County Sheriff's office says detectives believe Lund was on the run, battling a drug addiction when she had the child.
“It's a heartbreaking case,” Ireton said. “The mother herself is a child."
Following a tip, detectives found Lund along Casino Road in South Everett, but there was no baby and little cooperation from Lund.
People who live and commute in the area told deputies they'd seen Lund here since early October.
“We were getting a steady stream of information from the community with information about where she might be, very accurate, places she had been," said Ireton.
Lund's family is frustrated as well. Family members told KIRO-7 they hadn't seen her for months and they have not been allowed to see her while she was detained.
"I would hope that anybody who has information about the infant in particular would be willing to come forward and call our anonymous tip line or call 911 and help us locate her as quickly as possible,” Ireton said.
