Sequim police investigating possible child kidnapping attempt

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

SEQUIM, Wash. — A Sequim family is keeping their children close to home after one of their boys said a man with a knife tried to pull him into his vehicle near Margaret Kirner Park Monday evening.

"He picked me up and tried to put me into his van," the child told KIRO 7.  "I stepped on his toe and pushed him away and ran."

The boy's mother asked KIRO 7 not to show the child's face or publicize his name.  She said there were multiple children at the park at the time who told her-- her son yelled at them all to run – warning them about a man with a knife.

The boy's father said his son is still very upset and afraid.

"He's scared when he sees cars," Sergio Arriola told KIRO 7.  "He's shaken up."

Arriola and the boy do not share the same last name.

The Sequim Police Department is actively investigating the incident.  Although there's been much speculation posted on social media about what the suspect looked like and what kind of vehicle he might have been driving, Police Chief Bill Dickinson requested that any suspect or vehicle descriptions not be released to the public yet.

Meanwhile, Dickinson doesn't believe the public is in any danger.

"At this point, I don't think there's any reason for community alarm," Dickinson told KIRO 7.  "I don't think we have somebody running around here trying to grab our children," he said.  "But until we complete the investigation, I really can't be sure."
