On Thursday, former Auburn Police officer Jeffrey Nelson will learn what sentence he will serve after being charged with second-degree murder in June 2024.
Nelson was the first officer to be charged following new standards for officers was adopted in Initiative 940.
In June 2024, Nelson was charged with second-degree murder and assault for shooting Jesse Sarey, 26, while attempting to arrest him for disorderly conduct.
“Jesse Sarey died because this defendant chose to disregard his training at every step of the way,” King County Special Prosecutor Patty Eakes told the jury in her closing argument. “The shooting of Jesse Sarey was unnecessary, unreasonable and unjustified.”
Sentencing is expected to be at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent.
The court session is set to begin at 8:30 a.m.
