Seattle lawmakers consider expanding car-sharing programs

SEATTLE — Seattle lawmakers are considering expanding car-sharing programs after the success of Car2Go.

Car2Go has expanded from 350 to 500 permits since the program launched last year.

The Seattle Times reports a new proposal would let car-sharing companies buy up to 750 permits to serve the entire city.

It would eventually allow as many as 3,000 permits.

In May, KIRO 7 investigated Car2Go cars taking up parking spots for thousands of hours.

Drivers can pay online, by the minute, and then leave the keys inside for the next driver. They don't have to pay for parking.

Cars can  sometimes sit for days in the same spot.

Digging through data, KIRO 7 found in one year, Car2Go cars got 1,200 parking tickets.

Car2Go pays the city a flat fee per car.
