Seattle getting flood of reports about illegal dumping

Last winter KIRO 7 talked to neighbors in Rainier Beach about the problem who said sofas, chairs, bed frames, mattresses and clothes were some of the items that were dumped.

SEATTLE — Crews are trying to keep up with a flood of reports about illegal dumping on Seattle streets.

Part of the reason for all the reports might be because of how easy it is to report them.

Some of the worst areas were identified in a report by the Seattle Times.

The biggest problem is on Capitol Hill, but Ballard and University District can also be littered with trash.

The city recently unveiled an app on smartphones which lets people identify problem areas.

Because of that, the city has seen a 75 percent increase in reports of dumped trash so far, according to the Times.

Last winter KIRO 7 talked to neighbors in Rainier Beach about the problem who said sofas, chairs, bed frames, mattresses and clothes were some of the items that were dumped.

Seattle Public Utilities told KIRO 7 they will try to catch people in the act of illegal dumping but it's difficult and expensive.

Last year, the Times reports 1.9 million pounds of garbage were dumped in Seattle.
