School reopens but some opt to stay home after online threat

SAMMAMISH, Wash. — The investigation into a threat to Skyline High School students hit a dead end after the IP address connected with the threat was traced to a proxy server in Sweden, police said on Friday.

Detectives have followed up on every lead from the public, but no suspect has been identified, said Sgt. Jessica Sullivan of the Sammamish Police Department.

Sullivan said there have been no additional threats to Skyline, nor any other school in the area.

Meanwhile, classes were canceled at Eastside Catholic School for security reviews on Friday in light of the threat that closed Skyline High on Thursday.

Skyline was open on Friday, but began late, at 9:55 a.m. School officials said there would be an increased police presence there, and students and faculty had the option of staying home if they didn't feel safe.

Officials said the image board site where the threat was posted, 4Chan.org, apparently pushes the posts through thousands of servers around the world, making it nearly impossible to track individual posts.

Detectives said it will probably take a tip from someone who knows who posted the threat to catch the person responsible.

Thursday’s threat from a supposed student claimed they would open fire in the commons area with a sub-machine gun.

A picture of a gun accompanied the post.

The threat mentioned “jocks” and rich students who flaunt their wealth and make others think they're better than everyone else.

Meanwhile, a Skyline High School student posted a video on Facebook saying classmates have been unified in fear since the threat, but he wants to turn the fear into something else.

“Why not unify over a common goal to be nice?  I think we can do it.  Next time you go to school, make the decision to impact someone's life in a positive way.  Say ‘Hi’ to someone.  Compliment someone,” student Jake Barokas said in the video.

On Friday morning, several hundred people had “liked” or shared his five minute video.

The King County Sheriff's Office said the person who posted the threat could be charged with felony harassment and cyber stalking.
