Prosecutors: Serial Seattle apartment burglar busted

A repeat felon is suspected of using a crowbar to break into a North Seattle apartment building and prosecutors say additional charges for similar burglaries may be forthcoming.

Prosecutors say surveillance video clearly shows Christopher Michael Moad using a crowbar to breaking onto the Nobel Apartments at 4301 Stone Way North. The burglary was reported March 1 by the building’s maintenance supervisor, and he told police the stolen goods included iPods, $1,000 cash, checks, keys and a garage door opener.

“Moad has been identified in six other burglaries of apartment/condominiums in North Seattle in the past two months,” Seattle police Detective A.C. Stephen wrote in a probable cause document.

Moad has pleaded not guilty.

Court documents show he was charged the Nobel Apartments early this month, and a second burglary count was filed April 17.

Police have not elaborated on the multiple other cases mentioned briefly in charging documents.

In charging documents, prosecutors say the state is concerned for the safety of the community because of Moad’s actions and criminal history.

“Here, the defendant is also on community custody with the Department of Corrections, and is still out committing multiple burglaries,” Deputy Prosecutor Darren L. Thompson wrote in charging documents. “Based on the facts here and the defendant’s violent criminal history, including two convictions for Assault in the Second Degree and 10 convictions for Assault in the Fourth Degree, the State believes the defendant may commit a violent offense.”

Moad’s history includes a felony conviction for drugs, burglary, strangulation and another assault case. He also has a criminal history in North Dakota, records show.

Moad’s case setting date is scheduled for May 1.
