BELLEVUE, Wash. — Police in Bellevue are investigating a homicide after firefighters discovered a woman's body inside an apartment unit.
The incident happened in an apartment complex in the 10400 block of Northeast Second Street.
According to police, Bellevue fire crews responded to an alarm at the Avalon Meydenbauer Apartments near Bellevue Square about 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Smoke was coming from a sixth-floor unit and the sprinkler was going off. When crews entered the apartment, they found a woman's body. A police spokesman said she had injuries that were not caused by the fire, it was clear she died from homicidal violence.
They believe the fire was set to cover it up.
Detectives scoured the apartment complex on Wednesday. They went door to door talking to residents. Ed Cook lives on the 6th floor, the same floor where the woman was killed.
"It’s obviously really unsettling,” Cook said. “I hope obviously justice is served and whoever did it gets caught.”
Investigators processed evidence from inside the apartment all day. They reviewed surveillance video from the complex. They hope someone saw something that will help lead them to the killer. Bellevue Police say they have not identified a suspect.
Neighbors are uneasy.
“I definitely made sure my windows were locked too,” resident Jami Jeffcoat told KIRO 7.
The building has controlled-access that requires a keycard to enter.
The identity of the woman who was killed has not been released. The King County Medical Examiner could release her identity on Thursday. Police did not say if the victim lived in the apartment or was visiting.
