Gang unit investigating shootings at 2 Central District parks

SEATTLE — The Seattle gang unit is trying to track down the people involved in two shootings Thursday evening that occurred while it was still light outside.

One person was later dropped off at the hospital with gunshot wounds, and an innocent family of four had a bullet hit their car as they drove down the road.

KIRO 7 has cellphone video in which at least 15 gun shots can be heard at Judkins Park around 8:30 pm.  Police say people in a black Acura got into a shootout with people at the park.   The Acura took off and crashed into two cars.

Lisa Castaneda found herself in the middle of it.

“Gunshots went off, a series of them to the point it sounded like fireworks,” said Castaneda, who was in one of the cars hit.  “I'm just happy I'm alive, praise Jesus.”

One person in the black Acura was arrested.

About a half hour after the shooting and crash at Judkins Park, there was another shooting at Powell Bennett Park about a mile away.  Again, in this case, someone in the park got in a shootout with someone in a car.  This time a stray bullet hit a car with a family of four inside who was randomly driving by. Fortunatelym they're OK.

“We come here later now that it's warmer,” said Elaine Newtson who brought her daughter to Powell Bennett Park on Friday.  “There's many kids here all the time, many under 5.”

Between the shootings and crash, there was only one serious injury.  A man was later dropped off at a hospital with life-threatening gunshot wounds.

It's rattled people who use the parks, especially in our warm summer evenings.

“It would definitely make me think twice about coming here that time,” said Zach Gordy, who uses the skate park at Judkins Park.

The Seattle gang unit is investigating, but is not saying how many people they think were involved.
