Celebration planned before April opening of new SR 520 bridge

SEATTLE — Before the new State Route 520 bridge opens to traffic in April, people will get a chance to walk and bike across it.

On Tuesday, officials with the Washington State Department of Transportation said they hope to open the bridge to westbound traffic April 11, and to eastbound traffic April 25.

Those dates are weather-dependent and could change.

To celebrate the opening, the state plans a weekend of activities April 2 and 3.

On Saturday, there will be a run and walk across the new bridge.

On Sunday, a grand opening bike ride that will also go to the University of Washington and onto the I-5 express lanes will take cyclists across the new floating bridge.

“This is our way of recognizing and thanking the public and the taxpayers who have invested in this new facility that will serve us for the next 75 years or more," said Julie Meredith of WSDOT.

Details of the opening weekend celebration are available at www.520golong.com.
