Electric skateboard causes thousands in fire damage; Everett family displaced

A KIRO 7 viewer sent in cellphone video, which showed firefighters breaking out the apartment window in the 3500 block of Wetmore Avenue in Everett on Wednesday.

The Everett Fire Department said one person was hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

"They were able to put the fire out pretty quickly,” Steve Goforth, the public information officer with the Everett Fire Department, said. “There was one gentleman who was in there. He awoke to a sound (then) looked over and there were sparks and fire of the electric skateboard that was charging.”

The electric skateboard is powered by lithium-ion batteries. Investigators believe a charging failure caused the electric skateboard to burst into flames.

"The fire in the center of that area was the skateboard, so that’s what our report is going to say,” said Goforth.

Lithium-ion batteries also power hoverboards that can overheat if they're charged too long.

In 2015, shoppers at The Outlet Collection mall in Auburn were evacuated after a hoverboard burst into flames.

As for what happened in Everett, those who live nearby are just glad the fire didn't spread throughout the complex.

“It’s really something you never expect to happen so close to home,” said Lisa Mudford, who moved from Gig Harbor to Everett.

The Everett Fire Department told KIRO 7 closing the door most likely prevented the fire from expanding beyond the bedroom and into the entire apartment.
