No jail time for parrot theft, assault

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

Sonya Brewer, who runs Graham bird sanctuary with her husband, began to cry as her lawyer pleaded with a King County judge not to send the couple to jail for their crimes.  Brewer cried again, as she spoke for herself.

"I am very, very remorseful for this whole situation," said Brewer, her voice breaking. "Because it's not in my character nor my husband's character."

Last July, she and her husband, Steve, violently took back a parrot and a cockatoo they had sold to Cheri Eir-Jones, claiming the Federal Way woman was abusing the birds.  The struggle left Eir-Jones badly bruised.

In court Friday, Eir-Jones told the judge she believes the couple should be jailed.

"When I said I didn't want to give them the birds, Sonya blinked, then she started punching," said an emotional Eir-Jones.  "And anyone who can go to violence that quickly to solve a problem, is a danger."

Judge Julia Garratt saw it differently.

"Many times, a set of circumstances arise where truly good people do really stupid and potentially dangerous things," she told the couple.

With that, she rejected the 30 days in jail the state sought and ordered the couple to perform 240 hours of community service.

Afterward, a disappointed Eir-Jones said it felt like no justice at all.

"Nothing has happened that will keep them from having this happen again," she said.

Moreover, she says her fight isn't over.

She plans to try to get the court to return the birds she feels should never have been taken away from her.
