New Amtrak station at Tacoma's Freighthouse Square in jeopardy

Unless officials can find a new spot for a proposed Amtrak station in Tacoma, the project might be in jeopardy.

Plans to buy part of Freighthouse Square near the Tacoma Dome stalled when the property owner and the Washington State the Department of Transportation could not agree on a price.

Officials told the News Tribune any further delays will make it impossible for the Department of Transportation to meet deadlines for building the new station.

The state had planned to tear down a section of the historic warehouse and build the station in its place.

The News Tribune reports that a new station is necessary because beginning in 2017, WSDOT will reroute Amtrak passenger trains from their waterfront routes to a new, faster route through Tacoma, Lakewood and DuPont that will relieve congestion on the tracks.
